Recommended Places to Stay & Eat
Harmarville, about a 5-minute drive from the Homestead, offers a plethora of dining, lodging, and even recreation (Bladerunners Ice Complex) options. Nothing fancy here, but an OK place to take the kids. Downtown Pittsburgh is generally about a 1/2 hour drive away, and neighborhoods like Oakland, Shadyside, and the South Side will lead you to less spartan fare.

The Three Rivers Free-Net offers a complete guide to Pittsburgh, and we suggest it as the best starting place to learn about the area, and where to stay and eat. Since we're not restaurant reviewers, we'll leave this task up to others. We will note that there's a guide to local vegetarian options from the World Guide to Vegetarianism.
